About Amelia Island, Florida

Even the name sounds beautiful. Amelia Island delivers slow, Southern charm and lovely scenery, with Victorian homes, miles of salt marshes and beaches to play and relax on. Amelia ranks among the 10 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World. Our main tourist attractions are our beaches, golf, fishing, Fort Clinch, and historic Fernandina Beach. There is a cruise ship with full international casino, live entertainment, dancing, and dinner. Amelia is one of Florida's best kept secrets.

Amelia Island is the last barrier island on the Atlantic coast of the United States. The island is approximately 2 1/2 miles wide by 14 miles long. To the west of Amelia Island is the Intracoastal Waterway and to the east is the Atlantic Ocean.

35 miles from downtown Jacksonville, Florida, Amelia Island offers the quiet of a small island while providing convenience of the big city. The town of Fernandina Beach offers a historical perspective of the old southern era. Pirates also called Amelia Island home and some say there is buried treasure that still lay unclaimed on the island. For your next vacation, come to Amelia Island and find adventure and romance once again.

In the last 400 years, Amelia Island can boast of being the only location in the U. S. to have been under eight different flags. The French flag flew from 1562 - 1565. The Spanish flag flew from 1565 - 1763. The English flag flew from 1763 - 1783. The Patriots flag flew over Amelia Island in 1812. The Green Cross of Florida flew in 1817 and was replaced that same year by the Mexican Rebel Flag. The U. S. Flag flew from 1821 to the present except during the Civil War when the Confederate flag flew from Fort Clinch from April 1861 to March 1862. History abounds at Amelia Island.
